Movie of the Week! (4/21/13-4/27/13)

Rango (2011)

While watching last week’s Movie of the Week selection, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, I couldn’t help but be amused while equally impressed by Johnny Depp. Sands is such a fun character and Depp is solid in the role. So while selecting the most recent Movie of the Week, Rango, I went for the Depp repeat as he provides his voice to the titular character. If another helping of Depp does not interest you, allow me to ‘sweeten the deal’ as they say. As this week’s MotW, Rango becomes the first animated film to receive the honor, which gives us a different type of film making to unpack. If that is still not enough, let me inform you that in 2012 Rango won an Academy Award for best animated feature. After all this said though, I have a confession. I have not seen Rango. Marketing for Rango, has always had me intrigued due to its quirky style but I have never got around to giving it a watch but this week that changes. So I think now is a good time to stop going on about all the potential Rango has to be a great Movie of the Week and get to work.

  1. Rango was an entertaining film for me. I would have liked it a little bit more if it had been 15 minutes or so shorter, I feel that it drags on in the middle when they were figuring out that Rango isn't quite who he claims to be. All in all, the voice acting and production is superb. Johnny Depp breathes an amazing amount of life into the unexpected hero.

In my opinion, this cartoon didn't seem like a children's film. I remember it being marketed as good clean family fun but it felt a little more PG-13 to me. Did you get this feeling at all? I'm not saying that children wouldn't enjoy this film, I'm sure they do, but it seemed to require a little more maturity to enjoy everything the film has to offer.

My favorite thing about the movie is the Rango character. I thought he as interesting character and I wouldn't be opposed to seeing them revisit the character in the future. My least favorite thing in the film was the four owls that sang summaries of the action. I didn't see the point of them and they added no novelty to the film for me.

    1. Rango: the spaghetti western of animation. I went back and forth with my appreciation of Rango as I was watching it. I liked the setup but thought it started to drag after that. I this this has do with the lead character pretending to be something he isn't. This seems like something that is done over and over. Maybe the main reason I do not like this type of story is because of its level of predictability.

However the films finale does offer some satisfaction even if it is loaded with action sequences. The animation is unique and makes for mesmerizing movements and actions (Especially the snake and Clint Eastwood-like man).

I really don;t think young children would enjoy Rango. There are very few jokes aimed at a young demographic which would cause for a young demographic to easily get bored. The style and dialogue is also more adult like. It is defiantly not your average animated film.
